  1. Won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award and the JFE Steel Award at the 2nd Kosen GIRLS SDGs ×Technology Contest (Kosen GCON2023)!

On Sunday, January 21, Reiwa 6, a joint team of Toba O.S.K. College of Technology and Toyota National College of Technology won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award and the JFE Steel Award, the top prize, at the 2nd National College of Technology GIRLS SDGs ×GCON2023 Technology Contest held at Nikkei Hall (Otemachi, Tokyo).
The purpose of the National College of Technology GCON is to encourage further growth as future researchers and engineers by thinking about how the research and learning conducted on a daily basis by a team of mainly female students can contribute to various social issues from the perspective of the SDGs. This time, a joint team of Toba National College of Technology and Toyota National College of Technology (team name: Kakismugume) presented a presentation titled “Unfired Smart Oyster Shell Tiles That Absorb CO2”.
This initiative was implemented through industry-academia regional collaboration with the cooperation of Care Shell Co., Ltd. (Toba City) and Nakajima Ceramics Co., Ltd. (Tajimi City).

Title: Unfired Smart Oyster Shell Tiles That Absorb CO2
(Overview)
Toba City is one of Japan’s leading oyster-producing areas.
On the other hand, Tajimi City is one of Japan’s leading ceramic towns.
Toba City is facing the problem of a large amount of oyster shells generated in the production process of oyster farming. Tajimi City is facing CO₂ emissions in the ceramics industry and a shortage of raw materials due to a decrease in clay mines. To solve these problems, we process the oyster shells that are disposed of into unfired tiles and turn them into valuable resources. If it is widely used as a building material in society, it can be said that it will make a significant contribution to carbon neutrality. Fishing towns and ceramic towns can form partnerships to generate profits together and achieve sustainable industrial development.
We propose a new tile manufacturing process to turn oyster shells into a valuable resource.
