Dr. Yoshiaki TAKAI, PRESIDENT
Development of science and technology in the twentieth century enabled rapid progress in human activities. It is especially true in Japan where people have come to enjoy a better quality of life.
On the other hand, it is also a fact that progress has been creating distortion in many aspects of our lives. What role should Science and technology play in the twenty first century? A broader and longer-term perspective is required to answer this question.
It is technology itself that supports production activities, but it is engineers who provide broader perspectives to add better value to these activities. This contribution is possible when engineers retain not “merely a vague perspective”, but “efforts to deepen the knowledge of technological foundation and its origin”. It could be said that these efforts would create a new and broader perspective in which they can reconsider its origin. At the same time, flexible and varied teaching is required mainly because the system of theCollege of Technology is the only higher education system of our country that admits relatively young students.
I would like to nurture innovative technology and engineers for the peace of the world and the wealth of human life, supporting the environment where faculty and students make every effort to improve themselves without forgetting their own foundation and starting point.
